Our Concept Engineers are hands-on, creative spirits that can see past perceived barriers and use that mentality to uncover new ways of thinking to solve challenging user needs and technical hurdles. As part of a cross-functional team composed of equally motivated Design Researchers, Industrial Designers, and other Concept Engineers, you will work to uncover unmet user needs, ideate creative ways to solve the unmet needs, and act as the technical expert in the creation and execution of the ideas into concepts.
You'll also be DISRUPTIVE through these duties and responsibilities:
- Participate in local and regional field research and user centered design process.
- Define benefits that are critical to our users and build prototypes to execute on those benefits.
- Work closely with other core competencies within the organization (Marketing, Reliability, Testing, Rapid Prototyping) to develop best-in-class products.
- Critically evaluate product designs considering user needs, durability, materials, and manufacturing processes.
- Perform a wide variety of engineering and design tasks including but not limited to:
- Translating user observations to insights
- Rapid Prototype development ranging from low fidelity to looks-like/works-like concepts
What TOOLS you'll bring with you:
- Bachelor of Science Degree in Robotics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical engineering, Computer Science, and/or a related Engineering degree
- Minimum of 2 years on a Front End Innovation Team with a proven track record of creativity and invention in the Consumer Products Market
- Working knowledge of engineering trends within the discipline -- can provide tactical improvement suggestions and step-change ideas
- Ability to use equations to model & predict behaviors of mechanical, electrical, and optical systems
- Willingness to fail in order to learn

Mechanical Skills
- Strong mechanical aptitude based on experience including a knowledge of mechanisms, engineering materials, mechanical properties, and manufacturing processes
- Familiarity with parameters involved in designing gear trains including speed, torque, backlash, and gear types.
- Ability to design medium-to-complex physical mechanisms in CAD software (preferably using NX or SolidWorks)
- Familiar with 3D printing and designing parts for printability
Electrical Skills
- Proficiency designing and building embedded systems using off-the-shelf actuators, microcontrollers, and sensors
- Experience with electrical lab test equipment: oscilloscope, sig-gen, multimeter, digital signal data acquisition
- Strong ability to troubleshoot basic electrical circuits
- Familiar with wired (I2C, SPI, UART) & wireless communication protocols & attributes (RF, BLE, IR, packeting, data integrity/check sums, start/stop sentinels)
- Experience taking a circuit design to breadboard to perfboard to PCB
Programming Skills
- Ability to build & utilize pre-existing coding libraries
- Familiar with linear algebra/matrix/3D math
- Strong ability to debug code
- Familiarity with common control schemes (PI, PID)
Other TOOLS we prefer you to have:
- Familiarity with Adobe Suite or counterpart software
- Familiarity with version history code sharing platforms (such as GIT)
- Familiar with C, C++, and some form of object-oriented programming
- Experience developing UI/UX for products utilizing embedded systems
- Proficiency in a workshop using various machinery to develop functional mechanical prototypes (laser cutter, water jet, mill, power tools of all varieties)
- Working understanding of basic optical thin-lens principles
- Sketching abilities are a plus for communication purposes
