The Senior Design Engineer's primary role uses highly developed engineering expertise and project management abilities to contribute to the design and development of new products and support of existing products within the Manufacturing Engineering department. This engineer will drive Design for Manufacturing (DFM) efforts to ensure proper development of products to be manufactured.


Duties and Responsibilities

  • Project Management
    • Lead mid to high-level design projects providing direction, guidance, and engineering expertise to team members.
    • Facilitate project flow involving regular contact with manufacturing and other cross functional staff members; must correctly follow all METCo procedures covering new product development and design output in addition to procedures of non-engineering departments related to project flow.
    • Schedule, develop agendas for, facilitate and document project meetings.
    • Track project schedule to ensure adherence to timelines; keep management informed on project issues.
    • Make formal presentations regarding project status.
  • Interact with manufacturing plants to maintain familiarity with cell operations and staff.
  • Make component material or process recommendations.
  • Occasionally, independently explore the use of new materials.
  • Interact with suppliers to develop part/product specifications that meet performance requirements while also falling within manufacturing process capability.
  • Liaison between NPD Engineering and Advanced Manufacturing Engineering working on the Manufacturing team.
  • Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DFM/A), product model, and print refinement for NPD projects.
  • Prototype execution and knowledge capture for product development and manufacturing process development.
  • Tooling and equipment oversight for manufacturing regarding NPD projects.
  • Expert in 3D CAD with the ability to work with engineering and manufacturing to make product refinements and drive Engineering Changes to optimize the product and manufacturing of the product.
  • Independently write test requests to the Milwaukee Test Laboratory based on established standard test procedures and prior examples.
  • Exhibit vision and foresight to test the extremes of a design.
  • Manufacturing experience in as many of the following processes is preferred: Tooling and molds, metal stamping, plastic injection molding, metal fabrication, machining, heat treating, product decorating, and diecasting.


Education and Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering; or similar field.
  • 5+ years of experience in related design field.
  • Proficient in GD & T tolerance analysis and FMEA
  • Broad technical knowledge in the design and development of mechanical and electromechanical systems
  • Able to model and predict system performance based on engineering principles
  • Strong analytical skills utilizing data-based decision making
  • Self-starter with willingness to learn outside primary discipline and manage ambiguous design tasks
  • High proficiency in Microsoft Office programs, especially Excel and Power Point.
  • Ability to travel 10% of the time is required (travel includes Domestic and International).
  • High interest in tools of the trade.
